Why moving forward—imperfectly—is the real key to growth

Starting my own life coaching practice has brought me right back to the whirlwind of thoughts and feelings I used to get when preparing for a new semester, replaying mistakes from basketball practice, or skipping a friend’s birthday party because I didn’t know anyone else attending. I catch myself lingering in the planning stage–hesitant to launch my blog, post on social media, or make that phone call.
The advice I continue to receive: you’re ready. Or as my friend Ingrid would say, “If not now, then when? If not you, then who?”
I remind myself that growth doesn’t come from perfection. Growth happens when you’re willing to show up, experiment, and learn—even when things feel uncertain or chaotic.
Here are three ways to embrace progress over perfection:
1. Start Before You’re Ready
Spoiler alert: You’ll never feel 100% ready. Whether it’s launching a project, applying for a dream job, or learning a new skill, waiting for perfection only delays growth.
Take the first step, no matter how small. It might feel uncomfortable, but it’s also freeing. Every expert was once a beginner who was willing to stumble their way forward.
2. Celebrate Small Wins
Perfectionism thrives on an all-or-nothing mindset. But life isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about small, consistent actions that build momentum.
Pause to recognize your progress, no matter how tiny it feels. Did you send one email? Write one paragraph? Lace up your sneakers for a short walk? Celebrate it. Progress compounds when you acknowledge it.
3. Embrace Failure as Feedback
Perfectionism sees failure as the enemy, but failure is actually a teacher. Each misstep brings clarity about what works and what doesn’t.
Reframe mistakes as valuable data points. Instead of asking, “Why did I mess up?” ask, “What can I learn from this?”
Letting go of perfection isn’t easy, but it’s one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Progress may not always be neat, but it’s where transformation begins.
