Practical strategies to stay productive and protect your energy

Almost every parent I meet tells me their child needs guidance with time management. Whether it’s from parents, teachers, coaches, or bosses, we’re told to be more productive, work smarter, and squeeze the most out of every minute. But let’s be honest: life doesn’t fit neatly into a color-coded planner.
Here’s the good news: managing your time isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing what matters, letting go of what doesn’t, and making space for rest.
Here are three strategies to help you manage your time without losing your mind:
1. Prioritize What Really Matters
Not all tasks are created equal. Instead of tackling your to-do list in order, identify the one to three things that will have the biggest impact.
Ask yourself: What needs my attention most today? What can wait—or be delegated? This clarity can prevent overwhelm and focus your energy where it counts.
2. Time Block with Flexibility
Time blocking is a game-changer. Set aside dedicated time for focused work, errands, rest, or creativity. But don’t overpack your schedule; leave room for life’s inevitable curveballs.
Use your blocks as a guide, not a rigid rulebook. Flexibility ensures you stay productive and adaptable.
3. Protect Your Energy
Your time is finite, but your energy is even more precious. Pay attention to what fuels or drains you.
Schedule high-focus tasks during your peak energy hours and save low-energy tasks (like organizing emails) for later. And don’t forget to take breaks—your brain and body will thank you.
Time management isn’t about being perfect; it’s about working with your reality. Small adjustments can lead to big changes, so start where you are and build from there.
